Cicely Anne Rude earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and
worked in retail management for a time before resigning from the corporate world to
pursue graduate studies in education and linguistics.
Ms. Rude now teaches in the Gladys L. Benerd School of Education at the
University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. She specializes in teaching
educational linguistics courses designed for undergraduate and graduate students
who are preparing to become K-12 teachers. She strives to prepare future teachers
to effectively evaluate and support the needs of English language learners in their
classrooms.
In addition to working as a public school substitute teacher for two years,
her diverse experiences include teaching English in Japan, teaching adult English
as a second language, and teaching linguistics. She has also taught content-based
English language courses to college exchange students from Japan, and also taught
principles and practices of second language acquisition and bilingual education to
new and veteran teachers in Spain.
As the author of numerous newspaper and academic journal articles on the subject of
education, as well as resource materials for teachers, Ms. Rude has developed teacher
education workshops for numerous organizations including California Teachers of
English to Speakers of Other Languages (CATESOL), the Japan Exchange and Teaching
(JET) Program, and the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco.
"All of my work is founded upon the conviction that education is the key to global
unity, equality, justice, and understanding. I dream of a world in which no student
is linguistically, socially, or educationally marginalized, and in which all educators
receive ample support and credit for the valuable work they do."
